León is a nondescript city on the plains of Guanajuato. It is centrally located near Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende, Queretaro, and the city of Guanajuato. It is a trip to an industrial city with a growing automotive sector it is surrounded by farmland and ranches. But most travel info will tell you it is the shoe capital of the Mexico. León has a huge leather industry, making quality shoes, belts, and clothing. Most major shoe manufactures from America and Europe have outlet stores in León. The city has several large malls on the way to the airport with hundreds of stores. For a more inner city feel the downtown has some smaller shopping centers.
The city has a historical downtown center with great night and weekend activities. They also have an excellent soccer team, baseball ball teams and a basketball team.
Oddly the city is one of the most environmentally friendly cities in Mexico. Bike lanes crisis cross the city and are being expanded. It has also won awards for use of wastewater and bio energy. It is also an affordable city in both food and homes. The suburbs are growing and new townhomes can be found for under $60,000.
